Estimation of leaf area index and assessment of its allometric equations in oak forests: Northern Zagros, Iran

چکیده
The focus of the present study is the estimation of leaf area index (LAI) and the assessment of allometric equations for predicting the leaf area of Lebanon oaks (Quercus libani Oliv.) in Iran’s northern Zagros forests. To that end, 50 oak trees were randomly selected and their biophysical parameters were measured. Then, on the basis of destructive sampling of the oak trees, their specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area were measured. The results showed that SLA and LAI of the Lebanon oaks were 136.9 cm·g–1 and 1.99, respectively. Among all the parameters we measured, the crown volume exhibited the highest correlation with LAI (r2 = 0.65). The easily measured tree parameters such as diameter at breast height did not show a high correlation with leaf area (r2 = 0.36). Our obtained moderate correlations in the allometric equations could be due to the fact that branches of these trees had been pollarded by the local people when the branches were only 3 or 4 years old; therefore, the natural structure of the crowns in these trees might have been damaged.

Application of visual surveys to estimate acorn production of Brant`s oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) in northern Zagros Forests of Iran
Acorn production plays a fundamental role in the organization and dynamics of oak forest ecosystems. Regarding acorn importance, visual survey methods have been used to estimate acorn production of oak species throughout the world. In this study, the mast indices of Brant`s oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) were determined in a section of northern Zagros forests, almost 36 ha area, near Baneh, Kurdi...

Examining the economic value of carbon sequestration in forests is essential, given the risk of global climate change, which has posed a profound challenge to societies internationally. The present study investigates the amount of carbon sequestration and its economic value in the oak forests (Quercus brantii L.) of Pahnus forest habitat with an area of 990 ha, located in Chaharmahal va Bakhtia...
متن کاملAssessment of geostatistical and interpolation methods for mapping forest dieback intensity in Zagros forests
During recent years, oak decline has been widely spread across Brant’s oak (Quercus Brantii Lindl.) stands in the Zagros Mountains, Western Iran, which caused large-area forest dieback in several sites. Mapping the intensity and spatial distribution of forest dieback is essential for developing management and control strategies. This study evaluated a range of geostatistical and interpolation m...

Today, it is widely used satellite imagery to monitor vegetation cover. The aim of this study is to analyses the leaf area in the period of 1395-1381 with the spatial resolution of a kilometer using the data of two remote sensing products of MODIS Terra and Aqua and seasonally. For this purpose, data were analyzed and statistical-mathematical compilation, coding and database creation were done ...
متن کاملResponses of Herbaceous Species to Fire in Persian Oak (Quercus brantii) in Coppice Forests
Zagros forests are one of the important natural ecosystems in Iran with high plant diversity and variety of plant communities. In recent decades, fire events have frequently occurred in some of these ecosystems. The purpose of this research is to investigate the composition and diversity of herbaceous species after nine years of fire occurrence in the forests of Zagros in western Iran. For this...
